The Voice Within
A restless heart, a guilty mind,
Conscience awakens, leaving no peace to find.
In solitude, they confront their past;
Self-excuses falter, unable to last.
Restlessness and inner guilt,
Although it is not obvious,
Their conscience judges them.
Having no one by their side to relate the ordeal to,
They silently rethink.
They take sides with themselves and give clumsy excuses,
Trying to justify their wrong actions—
But they just cannot, even if they decide to wave it aside.
It still disturbs them— their own wrong actions—
Giving them so much dissatisfaction.
The weight of wrongdoing, a burden to bear,
Conscience condemns, leaving no room to share.
Dissatisfaction gnaws, a constant guest,
A reminder to listen to the heart’s unrest.
Let conscience be your guide, a beacon bright,
Illuminating right from wrong in the dark of night.
Heed its voice, and find your way
Through the turmoil to a brighter day.
This is the great work of the conscience:
It condemns all actions and inactions of everyone.
It should be everyone’s guide—
“Let your conscience be your guide.”
